Oil-binding agent (I) comprises a comminuted foam of a hydrophobic oleophilic plastic. Also claimed is the prepn. of (I) by comminuting a synthetic foam pref. polystyrene rigid foam or waste material pref. 90% under 3 esp. 0.5-1.5 mm particle size. (I) is comminuted by cutting and/or tearing pref. machining or brushing processes. The comminuted foam is covered with an oil pref. vegetable oil residue pref. up to 0.1 kg oil on 1 kg foam pref. by spraying or pulverising moving foam particles. (I) is packed in an oil-permeable coating pref. in the form of cushions, matting, sacking or also opt. tubing. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) is used in the binding of oil after accidents on water or land, in the purificn. of water or containers or to retrieve leaked oil (claimed). It binds quickly and is environmentally-acceptable.
