The peptides are characterized by the ability to stimulate the production of anti-gp120, particularly anti-V3-loop, antibodies when administered to a mammal. The peptides are also characterized by the ability to interfere with viral function. The peptides can be formulated as a vaccine composition and administered as a method for stimulating an HIV-1 neutralizing immune response.
