<p>The transmission control module (14) of an automatic transmission (12) includes a shift control module (16) adapted to command a gear or gear range increment or decrement in dependence upon the switching of an enable switch (18) and one of an upshift switch (20) and a downshift switch (22), the switches being provided on the vehicle steering wheel (24). The performance of the engine (10) can thereby be controlled by the driver.
