In the windscreen-wiper system proposed, the wiper blade (5) is rotatably mounted on a telescopically extendable part (3) of the wiper arm and can be moved, lying substantially flat, laterally over the vehicle windscreen (1). The drive producing the pivoting motion of the wiper arm is transmitted to the wiper arm via two cable lines (7, 15); the first of which (7) causes the wiper blade (5) to rotate when its two lengths of cable (8, 9) move relative to each other. The second cable line (15) is used to alter the length of the wiper blade. It consists of a payingout cable (16) which passes over a first pulley (18) driven by the wiper-arm pivoting-motion drive and over a second pulley (19) mounted on the lower part (2) of the wiper arm; and is attached to the telescopic part (3) of the wiper arm; and a pulling-in cable (17) which is made up of both the lengths of cable (8, 9) and passes from the pulley (10) mounted on the telescopic part (3) of the wiper arm back to the driven pulley (18).
