This apparatus for controlling the position of a steering gear of a vessel, of the type comprising two double-action manoeuvring jacks (1, 2) which are connected to the ends of a main-piece bar (3) of the gear and connected to means (4) for feeding fluid under pressure, the functioning of which is regulated by means for controlling (5) the position of the gear in relation to a reference position, is characterised in that the means for feeding the manoeuvring jacks with fluid under pressure comprise a feed group (6, 7) associated with each manoeuvring jack (1, 2) and in that it comprises means (8) for compensating the feed fluid pressures of the manoeuvring jacks (1, 2), on exit from these groups, in order to compensate the control of the manoeuvring jacks (1, 2) and stabilise the gear in position. <IMAGE>
