PURPOSE:To prevent the occurrence of an engine stall during rapid brake through lock up control during coasting. CONSTITUTION:A lock up clutch located in a torque converter is engaged at a coasting region and fuel consumption is reduced through effective utilization of a fuel cut region. Meanwhile, pedaling of a brake pedal is detected, and through reduction of the engaging force of the lock up clutch, a slip lock up state is produced. Deceleration of a vehicle is detected, and during rapid deceleration wherein deceleration exceeds a given value, an engine stall is prevented from occurring through forced disengagement of the lock up clutch. |
