The present invention relates to a process for the synthesis of an alpha -halogenated carboxylic acid halide by reaction of a gem-polyhalogenated compound with carbon monoxide in the presence of a catalyst comprising a salt of a metal from group IIIA or VA of the periodic table of the elements, a salt of a metal from group IB and a salt of a metal from group IIB, IIIB, IVB, VB, VIB, VIIB or VIII, which in particular makes use under relatively gentle temperature and pressure conditions possible. The alpha -halogenated carboxylic acid halides are intermediates in the synthesis of pharmaceutical or plant-protection products.
