Aromatic mesomorphic polyesteramides forming a liq. crystalline, fibre-forming melt below 320 deg.C contain (a) 5-35 mol.% (I), (b) 5-15 mol.% (II) (c) a molar amt. of (III) corresp. to the sum of (a + b) and opt. (e), comprising units of (VI) or (VII), (d) at least 10 mol.% IV (e) 2-15 mol.% of (V) or (VI) in which part of (VI) may be replaced with (VII) with the proviso that the sum of the mol. amts. of (a) to (e) are equal to 100 mol.%. Pref. (b) is partly replaced by VIII and/or IX comprising esp., 3-12 mol.% of (VIII) or (IX) and (a) may be partly replaced by R = halogen, 1-4C alkyl except tert.-Bu, or phenyl; n = 1, 2 or 3, esp. 5-15 mol.% of (X). Tg is pref. greater than or equal to 150 deg.C. The polyesteramides are prepd. by (i) reacting the underivatised hydroxy, amino and carboxy cpds. in the specified molar ratio with excess fatty acid anhydride at raised temps. (ii) distilling off fatty acid anhydride and fatty acid from the reaction mixture and pref. (iii) postcondensing at 150-250 deg.C.
