Splicing process for arc-welding the ends of optical waveguides - with automatic control by means of voltage-time plot

A splicing process is disclosed for arc-welding the ends of optical waveguides, in which an arc is produced between electrodes and a constant discharge current flows. During the arc-welding process, a characteristic voltage line is recorded for the voltage between the electrodes as a function of the splicing time. The splicing operation is terminated when a given voltage-dependent criterion is fulfilled. The characteristic voltage line is pref. scanned. ADVANTAGE - The splicing parameters are automatically adapted to different types of waveguides, in a rapid cost-effective process.
