PURPOSE:To prolong the life of a tool and increase processing efficiency by forming and repairing an original carbide or nitride layer by making use of the carbonization or nitriding of a tool or tool tip surface in response to the wear of a high hardness abrasive grain layer comprising the carbide or the nitride. CONSTITUTION:The surface around the tip part 1a of a tool base material 1 is previously covered with a layer 2 of each of metals such as titanium or tantalum or said layer is attached to said surface. And, the surface of this layer 2 is covered with a high hardness abrasive grain film 2a, e.g., titanium carbide. In the case where the high hardness abrasive grain film 2a is worn away following the processing in the above description, said film 2a is repaired and recovered by a treatment wherein a part of said abrasive grain film is carbonized or nitrided to the thickness of about several 10mum or less from a surface layer part adjoining said film 2a of the layer 2 made of metal, etc. For example, a prescribed amount of gas is injected from a gas nozzle 4 to the layer 2 made of metal, etc., while a laser beam is radiated onto the surface of the layer 2 from a heat radiation gun 5 in order to cause the diffusion of carbonization or nitriding reaction on said surface of the layer 2. |
