The microwave VCO comprises two FETs (16,17) connected through capacitors (22a,22b) in a "ring" configuration and a microstrip line resonator (18). To the gate (G) of each of the field effect transistors a control voltage is applied for changing the gate-source capacitance, thereby obtaining two isolated tuning controls which provide increased tuning bandwidth with reduced phase noise. The design uses a broadband active feedback topology resulting in greater device size for higher output power and circuit Q. The VCO was fabricated with both MESFET and HEMT device MMIC technologies and is used in a radar system. <IMAGE>
