PURPOSE:To expand the allowance of the position precision of a probe by setting the OR signal of plural scan information strings to be a reproducing signal. CONSTITUTION:Data are recorded on a recording medium as the difference of electric conductivity by respective recording segments. Thus, on/off is judged by the difference. Prescribed bias voltage is impressed between a storage probe electrode and the medium, and data is read by the value of tunnel current flowing in accordance with electric conductivity in respective sement positions. The recording area of information for one line is scanned by covering it at a half interval smaller than the size of a recording bit. The five recording bits are formed on first and second recording lines (1) and (2), and a dot line shows 'off', and a solid line shows 'on'. Six lines An, Bn,...En and Fn (n=1, 2,...) are scanned for recording information for one line and reproducing scan for the lines (1) and (2) is inclined by an angle theta. Thus, the allowance of the position precision of the probe can be expanded.
