The present invention provides a fountain solution for a diazo-based lithographic printing plate comprising a dextran whereof at least part of the hydroxyl groups have been modified into an amine and/or ammonium containing organic residue. The fountain solution preferably also contains hexylene glycol. Scumming and ink staining of diazo-based lithographic printing plates developed by plain water is avoided.
