PURPOSE:To obtain a new polyhydric phenolic compound useful as a branching agent for polycarbonates, polyesters, etc., an epoxy resin and their curing agents. CONSTITUTION:1,3-Dihydroxy-4,6-bis[alpha-methyl-alpha-(4'-hydroxypheny l)ethyl]benzene expressed by the formula. The aforementioned compound can be produced in good yield by reacting (A) 4-isopropenylphenol or its linear polymer with (B) resorcinol in the presence of an acidic catalyst, preferably hydrochloric acid or hydrobromic acid, preferably at 1.3-2.5, especially 1.5-2.3 molar ratio of the component (A) (4-isopropenylphenol units in the case of the polymer)/ component (B). Furthermore, the aforementioned reaction is preferably carried out in a solvent and the reaction temperature is preferably 0-100 deg.C, especially 30-60 deg.C. |
