CONSTITUTION:NOx in exhaust gas is subjected to catalytic decomposition or NOx in exhaust gas mixed with a reducing agent is subjected to selective catalytic reduction. In this case, a Chevrel phase compd. represented by a formula MxMo6S8-yor MxMo6S8-yO2 (where M is a metal, S is chalcogen and O is oxygen) is used as a catalyst.
