<p>An apparatus for sterilizing a contaminated article having container means for storing the said article, a solution stored in the said container means for at least partially covering the said article, a cathode and an anode at least partially in contact with the said solution, a current source and first and second conductor means respectively operatively connecting the said anode and cathode to the said current source for enabling a current to flow between the said anode and cathode, characterised in that the said solution has constituents capable of generating free radicals in response to an electric current, and in that there are timing and control means for controlling the said current releasably connectable to the said container means and including first conductor means releasably connectable to the said anode, second conductor means releasably connectable to the said cathode, power supply means, timer means and switch means operatively connected to the said power supply means, the said timer means, and at least one of the said first and second conductor means, for connecting the said power supply means to the said one of the said first and second conductor means at a first predetermined time when or after the said container means is connected to the said timing and control means and for disconnecting the said power supply means from the said one of the said first and second conductor means at a second predetermined time after the said first predetermined time is disclosed. A method of sterilizing an article by immersing it in a solution characterized in that the solution has a salt dissolved in it and an electric current is caused to flow between the said electrodes through the said salt solution at a magnitude greater than required to generate free radicals of elements of the solution for disinfecting the said article is also disclosed.</p> |
