The invention relates to a process and a device for reconditioning a roller T in a papermaking machine, which roller T is arranged so as, during the reconditioning, to be in place in the papermaking machine in its working position and is arranged to form a press nip with a counter-roller. In the process, the wear to the roller surface is measured at least in the edge region of the roller and, when the edge error K exceeds a given permitted maximum error, the said edge error K is removed by grinding the roller T in the edge region of the roller to that profile level which the roller T has in that region which is in contact with the weave which runs via the paper web or the press nip. Once this edge error K is removed, the grinding interval of the whole longitudinal profile of the roller T is appreciably extended and servicing costs are therefore reduced. <IMAGE>
