A method of producing a high-resistance semi-conductor cell comprises the steps of evenly distributing amorphous powdered selenium on a base-plate, sprinkling, on to the selenium, granules of an inert, non-conductive, thermally stable material (e.g. silica gel, glass, silica, alumina, mica), pressing with heat to bond the selenium to the plate, annealing the selenium, forming a barrier layer as by immersion in a sodium hydroxide solution, and applying a counter-electrode. As described, the baseplate is formed by spraying a layer of steel on to a roughened, cleaned, aluminium plate. To the powdered selenium is preferably added selenium dioxide, sodium chloride, sulphur and water. A large rectifier plate produced according to the invention may have small individual cells punched out of it.</p> |
