The surveillance of underground effluent formation (2) and its exploration are carried out by installing various apparatuses or user modules; reception assemblies (Ri, Rj, Rk) such as geophones or hydrophones, state sensors (C1, C2), tools requiring an electrical power supply etc., at different locations along one or more wells (1) drilled into a formation, behind casings used for lining these wells, or alternatively in the annular space between these casings and production tubing, and by connecting these apparatuses to a surface station (4) by a special, multichannel transmission assembly which is simple and reliable. The surface station is capable of adapting its commands as a function of the apparatus to be controlled resultingly, of receiving all the signals which they transmit, whether analog or digitised and encoded, and of adapting to several modes of allocation of the transmission channels. With such a system, long-term, large-scale surveillance operations can be carried out under economically satisfactory conditions.
