Vessel (31) is divided by a bag-like membrane (35) (or alternatively by a diaphragm) into a chamber into which a compressible fluid (e.g. nitrogen) can be charged by way of a valve (65). Inlet port (80) is annular and surrounds outlet port (82) by which the accumulator may be connected into a pipeline carrying a substantially-incompressible fluid (e.g. a liquid) required to be influenced by the accumulator (e.g. to eliminate pulses therefrom). Conically-shaped plate member (100) secured to the underside of the membrane (35) faces the ports (80, 82) and serves, when the liquid pressure is relatively low and the membrane (35) is fully extended, (a) to prevent extrusion of the membrane (35) into the ports (80, 82) and (b) to maintain a connection between the ports (80 and 82) for continued flow therebetween.
