PURPOSE: To enable satisfactory transmission by generatign a compound sub- band signal by coupling 1st and 2nd sub-band signal components in an intensity mode, and transmitting this signal through a transmission medium. CONSTITUTION: An angle-determining means 50 at a unit 40 couples corresponding samples for each correspondent signal block in rK concerning 1st and 2nd sub-band signal components 1K and determines a straight line in a plane formed by a virtual coordinate system. Then, an angle equal to the angle made by a coordinate axis and a straight line is determined, so as to minimize the measured values of distances from the straight line to all the respective sample points. Next, the measured value of distance is compared with a threshold value by a comparator 51, and when this measured value does not exceed the threshold value, a control signal is generated. In response to this signal, the sample inside the 1st sub-band signal component is multiplied with COSαby a multiplier 41 and the corresponding sample in a 2nd sub-band component rk is multiplied with -sinαby a multiplier 42. Afterwards, the corresponding samples are coupled by a signal-coupling means 16.
