PURPOSE:To obtain the phase plate for a liquid crystal display which is optically uniform over the entire surface of a double refractive layer and is optically uniform even if a temp., humidity, etc., change by providing a specific film as the double refractive layer. CONSTITUTION:A film formed by stretching and orienting a thermoplastic norbornane resin sheet which is formed by a soln. casting method and has <=2wt.% residual solvent concn. is provided as the double refractive layer. The double refractive layer has preferably a multilayered structure matching the optical axis directions of >=2 sheets of the stretched and oriented films with the same direction. The thermoplastic norbornane resin is exemplified by a resin formed by subjecting the ring opening polymer of, for example, a norbornane monomer to polymer modification, such as maleic acid addition or cyclopantadiene addition, then to hydrogenation. |
