PURPOSE: To convert the spot width or an optical wave in an optical waveguide device without using any optical lenses. CONSTITUTION: A first integrated optical waveguide 1 for coupling of a semiconductor device is buried in a second larger waveguide 2 for coupling of a single mode optical fiber. The first waveguide 1 is made thin like a taper in the second waveguide 2 and is terminated in the front of and apart from an end face 21 of the second waveguide 2. The optical wave inputted into the first waveguide 1 is widened according as the first waveguide 1 is thinner, and the guided wave is taken to the second waveguide 2. |
