Use of jacalin, a preponderant protein component of jackfruit seeds, its fragments or its derivatives in the treatment of diseases associated with HIV viruses. Jacalin specifically inhibits the binding of HIV viruses to the CD4 receptors of lymphocytes and, in contrast to certain anti-CD4 monoclonal antibodies, does not inhibit normal lymphocyte functions.
