An emergency pneumatic tyre 8, to fit around the tread 6 of a deflated pneumatic tyre 5 on a vehicle wheel 2, comprises a flat flexible endless inextensible tread 9 which is secured to the outer periphery of a flat-sectioned inflatable endless annular fabric-reinforced tube 10 of at least the same axial width of the tread, the tube 10 being expansible radially inwardly of the tread 9 on inflation to deform and grip the deflated tyre 5. Due to the incompressible nature of the deflated tyre tread 6 it will be deformed by the inflated tube 10 into a circumferential series of undulations forming the base of an annular trough bounded laterally by the flexed sidewalls 7 of the deflated tyre. The inner periphery of the tube 10 will conform to the trough to locate the emergency tyre laterally and circumferentially. The tread 9 of the emergency type may comprise plies 15 of parallel cord fabric cross-laid with a cord angle of less than 45 degrees and anchored to lateral wire bead rings 16. The tread 9 is disposed on the tube 10 with the bead rings 16 overlying the edges 14 of a pair of cross-laid cord plies 13 which have a cord angle of not less than 45 degrees and serve to reinforce the annular rubber tube 10. The tread 9 is finished with a thin rubber covering 19 and the remainder of the assembly has a thinner rubber covering 20. An inflation valve 21 is provided adjacent a side edge of the tube 10 laterally outwardly of the tread 9, and for storage the emergency tyre 8 may be folded flat as shown in Fig. 3 and retained in the folded state by detachable straps 24. The folded emergency tyre may be applied by rolling the deflated tyre on to one of the elongated portions 22, 22<SP>1</SP> thereof, and then manipulating the free portion around the deflated tyre. For this purpose the portion 22 may have lines 25 marked thereon to facilitate correct alignment with the deflated tyre.. |
