The slip ring motor has a permanent magnet section and a coil section, with each connected to either the engine or the transmission. Slip rings (28) connect the motor to the control circuit (14) and the battery. When the engine operates the motor is used as a torque converter through the control of the circuit. If the engine is stopped then the motor can drive the vehicle. The motor is three phase, using three slip rings. The transmission shaft can be braked (32) enabling the engine and motor to charge the battery. ADVANTAGE - Simple hybrid transmission, no need for separate torque converter.
