A transparent sealed vial (10) containing a Karl Fischer solution (12) for use in colorimetric determination of water of a sample, and a process using this vial (10). In a preferred embodiment the vial (10) has a score mark (20) on its outer surface and an elastic band (18) around the vial (10) which covers the scoremark (20). A first optical absorbance measurement is made. The vial (10) is then broken along the scoremark (20), the broken pieces being held together by the elastic band (18) which also prevents the atmosphere from entering the vial (10). The sample (24) can be introduced into the vial by injection through the elastic band (18) using a syringe needle (25). A second optical absorbance measurement is made and the water content is computed using the first and second optical absorbance measurements. The Karl Fischer solution (12) contains a reducing ion (SO2), a buffer, iodine in an amount less than 0.02 moles per liter, iodide and a solvent. |
