PURPOSE:To maintain performance of wiping means for wiping discharge port forming faces of an ink jet recording head and thereby stabilize discharge conditions of the recording head over a long period of time. CONSTITUTION:Cleaning means 3 with which wiping means are slidably contacted are provided in the vicinity of discharge port forming faces 1 to clean the wiping means, such as rubber blades, for removing foreign substances such as ink deposited by slidable contact with the discharge port forming faces 1. Further, even these cleaning means are cleaned by a method wherein caps 300 in a recoverying unit, which are provided to recover absorption of a recording head, are permitted to abut against the cleaning means and allowed their suction power to act thereon. Thereby, performance of the cleaning means and, hence, performance of the wiping means are maintained, and the wiping means can thus conduct wiping operation under favorable conditions. |
