A novel handlebar assembly (50) for a bicycle in which arm rest (64) for the cyclist's arms, forearms, or elbows are provided at slightly wider than shoulder width, and rearwardly angled hand grip portions (60) are provided forward of the back tier. The handlebar assembly may be formed as a rigid unit, or it may include adjustable joints so that the geometry of the handlebar assembly may be adapted to the preference or physical requirements of the cyclist. The cross bar (54) for the handlebar assembly preferably is dropped initially on both sides from the top of the bicycle's head tube (13) to minimize interference with the cyclist's knees during cranking. The dropped cross bar (54) can be formed of a substantially straight or bent piece of tubing in which the cross bar is operatively connected to the front fork (30) of the bicycle through a handlebar stem (52) that clamps to the cross bar at about the height of the lower most portion of the bicycle head tube.
|
