NEW BENZYLSUCCINIC ACID DERIVATIVE

PURPOSE:To obtain a new benzylsuccinic acid derivative useful as a treating agent for diabetes. CONSTITUTION:A benzylsuccinic acid derivative shown by formula I (A is bicyclic fused ring amino which may contain 1-2 unsaturated bonds in the ring; R is H, lower alkyl or aralkyl; C with * is in R configuration or S- configuration or C of mixture thereof) and a salt thereof such as (2S)-2- benzyl-3-(cis-hexahydro-2-isoindolylcarbonyl)propionic acid. The compound is produced by reacting a phenylbutyric acid derivative shown by formula II (R<3> in the formula is lower alkyl, aralkyl or another carboxyl protecting group) or a reactive functional derivative thereof with a compound shown by formula A-H (A is as shown above) and optionally eliminating a lower alkyl, aralkyl or protecting group.
