<p>A packaging material (20) for use in maintaining a controlled atmosphere for packaged produce includes a hole or holes (21) blocked by a substance, such as a hydrocarbon, which is solid at a lower temperature and is a liquid at a higher temperature. The packaging material is associated with an absorbent material (22) which is arranged to draw the liquified substance away from the hole or holes (21) at the higher temperatures so that the hole is opened and the packaging material is rendered more gas permeable at the higher temperatures. The packaging material (20) by increasing air ingress to the package at the higher temperature lessens the chance of anaerobic degradation of the produce occurring in the package at that temperature.</p> |
