A silicon carbide composite, formed from a preform that is heated and infiltrated with molten silicon, is formed by a method comprising: forming a composite preform comprised of a carbon fiber component, a carbon particle component, a porosity component, and a reactive powder component, each component being present in an amount that provides for complete infiltration of the preform and reaction with the molten silicon so there is essentially no detectable free silicon remaining in the composite after infiltration.
|
