PROCESS AND REACTOR FOR PRODUCING CHLORINE DIOXIDE FROM ALKALI METAL CHLORATE

To produce a gaseous mixture containing chlorine dioxide and chlorine, alkali metal chlorate is reacted with acid in aqueous solution in a reactor. The reactor has several reaction floors arranged one above the other, through which the solution flows downwards from the top. In the lower area of the reactor the solution depleted in chlorate and acid is boiled by indirect heating in a boiling chamber at a temperature in the range from 100 to 110 DEG C. The depleted solution is passed from the boiling chamber to a pressure chamber, in which there is pressure of at least 1.2 bar. The solution is boiled in the pressure chamber at temperatures from 110 to 150 DEG C and the vapours formed during boiling in the pressure chamber are passed through the boiling chamber for indirect heating.
