The invention relates to a method and a device for the continuous or semi-continuous casting of plates or of billets, in particular in aluminium or in aluminium alloy. The method consists in completely automating the casting, restricting the intervention of the operator, controlling the level of metal in the supply channel, imposing a law on the levels of metal as a function of time, which law is common to all the ingot moulds, after individual laws have been applied to each of the ingot moulds in order to enable them to rejoin this common law, and controlling the descent of the support plate of the false bottoms and the stopping of casting when the programmed length is attained. The device comprises sensors for detecting the heights and levels of metal in the channel and the ingot moulds, an automatic-action system for regulating the levels and controlling various operations: tilting of the furnace, descent of the plate, stopping of casting, and actuators for controlling the flow rate of metal into the ingot moulds. By restricting human intervention, the invention provides greater safety. By permitting more reproducible casting conditions, it affords better cast-product quality. <IMAGE>
