PURPOSE:To produce 2,6-dichloro-3,5-diisopropyltolutene (2,6-DCDIPT) of a new compound useful as an intermediate for medicine or agricultural chemical and produce 2,6-dichlorotoluene (2,6-DCT) utilizing the same compound. CONSTITUTION:(1) 2-Chloro-3,5-diisopropyltoluene is chlorinated with a chlorine gas in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst, mixed catalyst of the Lewis acid and sulfur or solid acid catalyst such as various kind of zeolite, silica or alumina or polar solvent such as nitromethane, acetonitrile or acetic acid to produce 2,6-DCDIPT. (2) 2-Chlorotoluene is reacted with propylene in the presence of a Lewis acid or solid acid catalyst and then the reaction product is subjected to chlorination reaction of the above-mentioned process (1) and the resultant 2,6-DCDIPT is subjected to transalkylation with an aromatic compound such as 2-chlorotoluene or biphenyl to produce 2,6-DCT. |
