The invention relates to a data processing method for a system for data exchange by digital multiplex in the form of synchronous and/or asynchronous information, constituted by digital messages in a given format, the system comprising a processing unit including a main memory, means for display on a screen and editing means. The method consists in: - recording in the main memory of the processing means a table in which all data, whatever its original format, is described according to a tree structure in the form of a field of binary elements (of bits) which is the son of a father binary elements field, the father himself possibly being the son of another father field if the said father field is not the highest in the tree hierarchy. - editing the data table using editing means.
