Device for holding a movable piece (1), such as a switching piece in a postal sorting installation, in a first or a second position and for causing it to pass from one to the other, as required, for example as a function of the coding signals borne by the letter. A cam follower (6) interacts with a cam line such as a groove (7) traced in a rotary disc (8). This line comprises stop parts (7A, 7B) of constant radius, and active parts (7C, 7D) of variable radius, and the angular dimension of each stop part is greater than the sum of those which correspond to starting-up and braking of the motor for driving the cam. <IMAGE>
