A folding device (10) for fabric webs (16, 18, 28) has a folding table (12), a folding carriage (22) that can be moved by a drive (32)in relation to the folding table and a folding carriage control (46) that allows the drive to be controlled in such a way that the folding carriage can be moved in a displacement zone (30) between two fixed end positions (26, 28) in relation to the folding table, whereas its speed (v) can be reduced in function of a slowing down ramp (92) when it approaches the end positions. In order to improve such a device so that the folding carriage cannot go beyond the end positions at a significant speed, the folding carriage is provided with an emergency bring system (94) and a safety control (50) determines independently from the folding carriage control the real speed of the folding carriage in the area of the slowing down ramp, before the carriage reaches the respective end positions, compares the real carriage speed (v) with a predetermined maximal value (v1-v4) and actuates the emergency braking system when the maximal value is exceeded.
