An excavator or construction machine has an engine (4) with its fuel supply controlled by a linkage (15-18) having an input at one end from a Bowden cable (25) coupled to an accelerator pedal at one end and a separate cable (25) connected to a hand control for stopping. A separate manual control (21) is in the form of a lever with a pair of actuator cables (2,6) one of which connects to the foot brake (5-8). Operation of the latter brings the vehicle to a stop and simultaneously the cable (6) is loaded to move the fuel control to the shut off position. ADVANTAGE - Engine shut down linked to brake operation.
