The precision smoothing tool for the superfinishing of bores, shafts or the like with any cross-section and made of very hard metallic material has grooves (18) between concentrically stepped working areas (17), the transition areas from the grooves to the working areas running approximately tangentially. The precision smoothing tool does not work by cutting but by material compaction on the workpiece to be treated. The basic body is made of a high-alloy pressure-sintered material, a thin nickel coating is applied to this in the working area for the purpose of adhesion, and a hard coating of titanium, in particular TiN or TiC2N, is applied to the nickel coating.
