The starting point are known space/time switching networks. The technical problem is that the capacity of a switching network could be increased by increasing the clock frequency. However, changing all interfaces, which is necessary for this, is only possible over a very long term. A transition solution is required which allows the gradual exchange or further extension using new interfaces. The basic concept is the use of switching elements, the inputs and outputs of which can be switched individually between two transmission rates. Example: a frame structure which is based on the lowest transmission rate is used as a basis. Within such a frame, signals with the highest transmission rate can also be temporarily stored and time-converted. Provision is made for 4 Mbit/s and 32 Mbit/s. The advantage is that it is easily possible to combine several channels into higher-capacity connections (N x 64 Kbit/s). The higher transmission rate is only used when actually required. This reduces the power dissipation and the interference radiation. <IMAGE> |
