A process is disclosed for producing small wooden boards by chipless cutting. A strip of timber (1) lying on a forward-feed path (3) is moved by a forward-feeding, pressing arrangement (18) against a cutting arrangement (7), so that the strip of timber (1) passes several successive stepped knives (10), being engaged by one knife only (10) at a time and being completely sliced into small boards (13) in a single operation. A device suitable in particular for applying this process has a forward-feed path (3) supported by a forward-feed and pressing arrangement (18), as well as a cutting arrangement (7) opposed to the forward-feed path (3) having several successive stepped knives (10) whose cutting edges are arranged at a distance (a) from each other that is always larger than the length (b) of the strip of timber (1) to be cut.
