PURPOSE:To obtain a thin display device with high contrast without using a light source from the back surface by giving such function to back substrate to absorb light transmitted through a color filter. CONSTITUTION:The color liquid crystal display device has a structure of a liquid crystal layer 4 interposed and supported by a pair of substrates 1, 2 provided with electrodes for driving the liquid crystal. In this device, such property is used that the liquid crystal layer 4 changes its state from scattering light to transmitting light and vice versa according to the voltage applied or not applied. A color filter 9 is provided on the substrate in the display side (front side), while a structure 8 to absorb light transmitted through the color filter 9 is provided on the opposite side (back surface) substrate 2. When no voltage is applied, incident light 6 is scattered by the liquid crystal layer 4 so that display according to colors of the color filter 9 can be obtd. When voltage is applied, the liquid crystal layer 4 transmits light, by which the incident light 6 reaches to the substrate 2 and absorbed by the light absorbing layer 8 so that it does not return to the front. |
