The application relates to a method and an arrangement for detecting and identifying impurities on water surfaces by determining the transmission properties of a water surface and of the gas phase due to water vapour above the water surface. The object of the invention is therefore to provide a method and an arrangement which enable continuous monitoring of a water surface. It is intended to avoid triggering a false alarm by identifying the interference. This object is achieved by measuring the transmission properties of the water surface by means of the decrease in the light intensity of a light beam repeatedly reflected between two mirrors and incident at an angle to the water surface and simultaneously determining the transmission property of the gas phase situated above the water surface and composed mainly of water vapour by means of the change in the intensity of a light beam travelling parallel to the water surface.
