A composition for functional food and a functional food containing said composition, wherein said composition is prepared by the lactic fermentation of a licorice extract and is freed from the disadvantage of the extract that it has such an extremely strong sweetness that it is difficultly edible while maintaining or even enhancing the pharmacological activies (both of the disease preventing and treating effects) of treating ulcers and hepatic diseases.
