The invention provides a valve (10) intended to be interposed in a motor vehicle fuel tank breather circuit of the type comprising a valve casing (12) provided with a lower inlet orifice (20) connected to the fuel tank and with an upper outlet orifice (18) connected to a pipe leading to the open air and in which there is arranged a float (22) which, in the top position, forms a stopper bearing in a sealed fashion against a portion (36) of the valve casing (12) and which comprises a passage (38, 40) connecting the inside (24) of the casing (12) to the pipe (18) leading to the open air, and in which there is arranged a safety valve (44, 41) which is normally closed and which is caused to open when, with the float (22) in the top position, the pressure prevailing on the inside (24) of the casing (12) is greater than a predetermined value, the closing member (41) of the valve being connected to a piston (44) mounted slidingly in a sealed fashion inside an internal bore (42) of the float (22) in which it delimits a control chamber (46) which communicates with the inside (24) of the casing and a return chamber (48) in which there is arranged a calibrated elastic return means (50) which forces the piston (44) in the direction corresponding to the closing of the valve. <IMAGE>
