Provided is a new use of the methyl ester of GM1 ganglioside for preventing or treating neuronotoxic damage in a human or animal subject. Such damage can be associated with ischemia, hypoxia, trauma and compression, metabolic dysfunction, epilepsy, neurodegenerative disease, chronic pain, and cerebral infarct. Also provided is a pharmaceutical composition, comprising the methyl ester of GM1 ganglioside and a pharmaceutically acceptable excipient, vector, or diluent.
