<p>An electro-mechanical converter comprising a piezo-electric device having first and second electrodes 1, 2, between which ferro-electric liquid crystal material is contained. The electrodes 1, 2 are preferably mounted on glass supports 5 and are covered by alignment layers 4. The alignment layers preferably undergo a homogeneous alignment process involving strong rubbing in parallel. Beneficially, the material of one alignment layer attracts spontaneous polarisation of the ferro-electric liquid crystal and the material of the other alignment layer repels such spontaneous polarisation. <IMAGE></p> |
