This application discloses herbicidal 1-aryl-pyrazoles, compositions containing them, methods of preparing them, and methods for controlling undesired plant growth by preemergent or postemergent application of the herbicidal compositions to the locus where control is desired. The herbicidal compounds have the following generic structure: <IMAGE> in which Ar is <IMAGE> R is chlorine, cyano, or nitro; R1 is a group -C(O)CR11R12-O-R13 in which R11 and R12 are independently hydrogen or alkyl; R13 is hydrogen, alkylcarbonyl, phenylcarbonyl, phenylmethyl, or alkylaminosulfonyl; R2 is hydrogen, alkyl, alkylcarbonyl, alkoxycarbonyl, or a group -C(O)CR11R12-O-R13; R3, R4, R6, R7 are independently hydrogen or halogen; R5 is halogen or haloalkyl; R8 is halogen; R9 is haloalkyl; R10 is hydrogen, halogen, or a group -NR14R15 in which R14 is hydrogen or alkyl; R15 is alkyl, alkynyl, or a group -CHR16-Ar1 in which R16 is hydrogen or alkyl; and Ar1 is tetrahydrofuran-2-yl; furan-2-yl, thien-2-yl, phenyl, or phenyl substituted with halogen or alkoxy. When R10 is a group -NR14R15, in addition to the substituents listed above, R1 may be alkylcarbonyl, haloalkylcarbonyl, or cycloalkylcarbonyl; and R2 may be hydrogen, alkylcarbonyl, or cycloalkylcarbonyl.
