In the electrode, the electrocatalytically active part consists of a nickel wire gauze which is covered at least on one side by a mixture of Raney nickel and polytetrafluoroethylene which is attached to a supporting structure which conducts electric current. The supporting structure consists of a frame (2) and a grid bounded by the latter and consisting of stays (3) or expanded metal (4).
